Peru Village has come to Los Angeles.   Between Melrose, Sunset and Vine streets, local Peruvians are realizing a dream of investing in their community and expanding buying power in the area economy.   With five Peruvian restaurants established in Peru Village, Peruvians have collected more than 600 signatures in support from residents and business owners.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, February 7, 2013, Peruvian Chamber of Commerce of California (PCCC) Director Maria Cavero Nelson will explain Peru Village at a PCCC dinner meeting and mixer.   She will reveal how Peru Village was born, and what organizers have achieved and hope to accomplish.   Also, she will answer questions and tell listeners how they can help Peru Village.   A native of Lima, Peru, Ms. Nelson serves on the Consejo de Consulta of the Peruvian Consulate in Los Angeles.

Peru Village guest speakers at the PCCC event will include: Milagros Lizarraga, President & CEO; Flavio Gonzalez, Vice President; and Tania Tapia, Secretary.   Peru Village memberships will be available at the event.

The meeting will be held at Taix restaurant, at 1911 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90026.   Dinner reservations are $25 per person, and may be made by contacting the PCCC at (213) 3867378 or (310) 775-3476.

At the meeting, PCCC Pres. Julian Hanberg will speak on his January 2013 humanitarian mission to Peru.   From January 3-15, 2013, Hanberg and PCCC Past Pres. Alfredo Sousa helped Peruvian singer-songwriter Andrea Andrea, Founder and President of nonprofit Angels of Charity & Music (ACM), bring her live show and food, clothes, blankets and other necessities to Lima, Puno and Andean communities as high as 15,000 feet.

In a ceremony organized by ACM and broadcast on Puno station Radio Onda Azul, Hanberg presented the first annual PCCC Cesar Herz Memorial Scholarships of $2,500.00 each to Tanya Luz Villanueva Alvarado and Madelin Hancco Salazar, students attending Universidad Nacional del Altiplano in Puno, Peru.   The Herz scholarships recall the PCCC founding president, a Peruvian who helped to strengthen trade and cultural exchanges between Peru and the U.S.

Radio Onda Azul station manager Yovanni Manrique Ruelas helped organize the scholarship applications with help from the Catholic Bishop of Puno, Jorge Pedro Carrión Pavlich.   Andrea gave a musical performance at the scholarship ceremony, where she welcomed four of six children being treated for cleft palate.   ACM and the Peruvian American Medical Society (PAMS) brought the children and their mothers to Ayacucho, Peru, where the young people have been receiving a series of reconstructive surgeries.

In 2012, the PCCC chose Ruth Lidia Delgado Faustino and Eduardo Reategui Monsalve, Jr., students at Universidad Nacional de la Amazonia Peruana (UNAP) Iquitos, for Herman L. Jesson Memorial Scholarships of $2,500.00 each.   The island of "Jessonia" is named for the explorer, travel guide and PCCC Past President who specialized in Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon.   And, the PCCC is awarding $2,500.00 each annually to two students attending Tricenteneria Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco.

Peruvian Sofia Mulanovich, the first South American to capture a world surfing title, was the guest of honor at a dinner sponsored by the PCCC in August 2012.   In 2011, the PCCC saluted Peruvian boxer Kina Malpartida, the women's super featherweight world champion, with dinner including live entertainment, speeches and special presentations.

Since 1977, the PCCC has been promoting trade, tourism and cultural relationships between Peru and the U.S.
