SOUTH OGDEN, UT. – When Peruvian immigrant David Utrilla started U.S. Translation Company in 1995, his center of operations was a basement apartment—his IT branch, a desktop computer.
As a Weber State University student, Utrilla saw that many of the educational materials from Peru were the same as those used in the U.S., just in different languages. He recognized an opportunity and decided to start a translation company.
“I knew there was a need,” Utrilla said. “It wasn’t easy in the beginning, but I found the market and was able to deliver a quality product quickly, with the best customer service I could.”
USTC ‘s first big customer came in the form of a large project from JBT Aerotech, a company that manufactures jet ways and de-icing equipment used at facilities around the world.
JBT agreed to hire Utrilla, with the understanding if he didn’t deliver what he promised, they wouldn’t pay. Utrilla and his employees worked ferociously to meet the deadlines making sure that each part of the contract was fulfilled with the utmost quality and professionalism.
Things took off, and shortly, U.S. Translation Company started offering interpretation services to compliment their translation business.
In 1998 USTC was awarded a contract to provide interpretation services with one of the world’s biggest suppliers of personal care products, Nu Skin.
The job was to provide professional interpretation services for an event that brings in tens of thousands of attendees annually, many from different countries around the world.
Again the small business was challenged with a gargantuan task, and again they succeeded.
Utrilla’s commitment to customer service and a timely, high-caliber product has helped USTC grow steadily each year, garnering media attention and award recognitions in the process.
Focus on quality and process were recognized by a third party when the company completed a rigorous auditing process to become ISO 9001:2000 certified in 2004, and again for a certification upgrade to ISO 9001:2008 in the fall of 2009.
In July, 2010 the company achieved the European EN-15038 certification adding another level of confidence in their product for potential clients.
2009 proved to be a breakout year for the company as it doubled its growth amidst economic recession. This accomplishment was highlighted on May 25th, 2010 when USTC was featured in a report that aired on NBC Utah Affiliate KSL Channel 5. See the Video
Helping businesses in the U.S.—especially Utah—Reach foreign markets through professional-grade translation and interpretation for product information, instruction manuals, equipment, conferences, conventions and events, has allowed companies facing sliding domestic sales - launch products and services in new economic arenas.
USTC also offers a wide variety of services in addition to translation and interpretation that includes desktop publishing, localization, voice over and transcription, global consulting, linguists and language testing in over 100+ Languages.
In December 2009, Utrilla was named honorary Consul to Peru in Utah, another title that’s helped increase business not only for USTC, but many other companies, government entities and educational institutions in Utah, the U.S. and Peru.
