A family-friendly EVE: Join the massive New Year's Eve party in Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY — As the clock ticks down to 2011, the Downtown Alliance hopes to see countless families at a massive street party on West Temple between 100 and 200 South, as well as in the Calvin Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center Dec. 29-31.
EVE, the official title of the event, will include music, dance parties, ski and snowboard competitions, improvisational comedy, film screenings, laser shows, art installations, activities for kids, fire dancers and midnight fireworks on Dec. 31.
The hours on Dec. 29 and 30 will be 6-10 p.m. Friday's fiesta will go past midnight.
"EVE is built for families and is an ideal way for kids and parents to celebrate the week between Christmas and New Year's Day," said Jason Mathis, executive director of the Downtown Alliance.
"EVE is a great way for kids of all ages to reconnect with their urban center and with their families during the holidays."
Temple Square and other nearby locations will also host activities. Temple Square will have multiple free concerts featuring music from around the world, such as Scottish bagpipes, Polynesian traditional song and dance and Japanese drummers.
Families can also enjoy storytelling, family history crafts, Christmas lights and a sing-a-long to Broadway show tunes.
There will be cosmic shows at the Clark Planetarium, karaoke at the Salt Lake Arts Center, Charlie Chaplin films at Broadway Center Cinemas and improvisational comedy at the Broadway Theatre.
A 150-foot long, three-story slope covered with 50 tons of snow will be in place for skiers and snowboarders to compete against one another.
"Those of us who will be enjoying the EVE-on-snow event with our families are in for an amazing show," said Dave Fields, vice president of resort operations for Snowbird.
"More than 16 feet of snow has fallen in Little Cottonwood Canyon this year so we can spare some for this fantastic event."
Additional noteworthy activities include a competition between tribute bands, an inflatable playground, a fire and ice sculpture garden and a white-elephant gift exchange, among others.
"We want to showcase the different things that Salt Lake City has to offer," said Danica Farley, public relations director for the Downtown Alliance.
EVE passes are $10 a day and children under 10 are free.
They can be purchased at participating Fresh Market stores, Maverik stores, the Salt Palace, Broadway Theatre, Broadway Center Cinemas and the Gateway concierge. Passes will also provide free admission on TRAX Dec. 29-31.
EVE attendees may want to keep their passes because a variety of Utah businesses will offer discounts into January.
