PRESS ADVISORY, FEBRUARY 12, 2011

MEXICANS IN UTAH REQUEST TEMPORARY
SUSPENSION OF VISAS FOR MORMON MISSIONARIES
Salt Lake City, Utah.  On behalf of dozens of Mexican citizens living in Utah, a
letter will be submitted to the Mexican Consul of Salt Lake City to request that
the Mexican government temporarily suspend the granting of visas for Mormon
missionaries that seek to travel to that country.

According to Raúl López-Vargas, spokesperson for these Mexican residents of the
state, “For us, the quantity of new bills that would make all of our lives more
difficult as immigrants, suggests that the leaders of the Mormon Church cannot
maintain their supposed “political impartiality” on this issue. With their
silence, what they have shown is a veiled approval, and even complicity, not
only with proposals for xenophobic laws that run contrary to respect for basic
human rights, but even with the actions and discourse of extremist groups here
in Utah.”
For this reason, these citizens are asking the Mexican government to not restore
the granting of visas until the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints comply with the following actions:
1.      Call a meeting with the press, in which together with elected officials
who belong to the church, they commit to support and adhere to The Utah Compact.
In addition, the elected representatives who belong to the church should commit
to not introducing any state or federal bill that infringes on the human rights
of immigrants, their children and their families.
2.      State publicly and categorically its commitment to promote and demand
that the U.S. Congress quickly approve just, humane and comprehensive
immigration legislation.
The letter also notes that the signers recognize that this church possesses the
moral authority to call together and guide elected officials who are members of
the church. The signers affirm that there is a nearly inseparable link between
the practice of politics in the state and the decisions of church leaders and
church doctrine.

López-Vargas added, “The question for us is, if here in Utah the church does not
respect the basic principle that families should not be forcibly separated, and
does not promote the defense of basic human rights, then what is the message
that their missionaries carry with them to other countries? What is message they
spread to our compatriots in Mexico?”
