Apreciado Manuel:

Mr. President
Please, receive the support and congratulations of the members of our New Jersey Chapter for all the initiatives to make the National Association of Hispanic Journalists a better and stronger institution for our members and for our community.
The New Jersey Chapter was reactivated in 2004 after the North Jersey Chapter and has among its members very important journalists working for different media companies. We have Hugo Balta, our past president of NAHJ, and many other members.
In the past year we created the Jose Rohaidy Scholarship Award in memory of Mr. Jose Rohaidy one of the pioneers in the Hispanic Journalism in New York and New Jersey who worked more than 30 years for EL DIARIO LA PRENSA, the oldest newspaper in Spanish published today in the USA.
This scholarship started several years ago as part of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, but then our chapter was disactivated and we tried to continue this initiative as individuals. With the help of donations from several local merchants in New Jersey we continued this small award with the Montclair State University in the last four years.
This is the first time that this award has a name: Jose Rohaidy Award for a Journalist student at Montclair State University in New Jersey. The student Kelsey Rojas received the scholarship this year. We hope to continue in this with the help of the national board.
We also organized a conference about the Ucchuracay case, the Andean place in Peru where 8journalists were murdered more than 30 years ago. Our new member, Carmen Valdivieso Hulbert, is finishing a documental about this case and she was the keynote speaker of this conference in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.
We also supported other local organizations activities as Citizenship Campaigns and others.
We are planning for this year to continue this and other activities for our members and for the Hispanic community also. Campaigns in order to get more members, etc.

MOTION TO CREATE THE DAY
OF HISPANIC JOURNALIST
Since 2008, our member Roberto Bustamante, has been pushing to create the Day of Hispanic Journalist in our calendar as a way to help the unity and integration of Hispanic Journalists in the USA.
In New Jersey we have journalists from several nationalities (Colegio de Periodistas Cubanos, Colegio de Periodistas Dominicanos, Colegio de Periodistas Peruanos, and other groups)
In Peru, we celebrate the Day of Journalist in October 1st. for more than 50 years to recognize the important role of this profession for the community and the whole country. This date was chosen because October 1st. of 1790 was created el “Diario de Lima”, the first newspaper in Peru and Latin America also.
We are bringing the same idea to create the Day of Hispanic Journalist in the United States a part of other Hispanic celebrations. To have a special day to recognize the role of new and old generations of journalists to this country. We hope your support in this initiative.

AMONG OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
·     Create a ID card as member of NAHJ
·     Coordinate with the national board more chapter activities. Receive their advise and experience how to organize our year chapter activities, how to get sponsorships, etc.
·     Visit the different media organizations as NAHJ representatives to create and keep a relationship to help our members to get jobs and increase the presence of Hispanics in the news industry, one of our goals.
·     Organize conferences with different community groups to advise how the media works to help in the publications of their activities.
