Visit Peru's festivals: September 2011

The month of September is the one with the most cultural festivities in Peru. Among them you will find celebrations for Peru's rich ecological diversity, its strong Catholic roots and the Peruvian Paso Horse.

SEPTEMBER 2011
Location: TumbesDate: September 1 - 5
The Tumbes town of Zarumilla pays homage to their patron saint the Virgin of Perpetual Help with various masses held in her honor, week-long processions, horse races, cock fights and a big party in the center plaza that everyone in town is invited to.
 
Lord of Burgos Festival
Location: AncashDate: September 1 - 5
 
The town of Recuay in Ancash honors the Lord of Burgus by hosting a series of cultural events. Included are religious processions, folkloric dance festivals and contests; artisan fairs and open air concerts by popular musical bands.
 
Anniversary and Tourism Week in Rioja
Location: San MartinDate: September 3 - 23
 
The city of Rioja celebrates this week through an array of cultural events. There are agricultural, crafts and art fairs; boating and mountain biking competitions; food sales and competitions; beauty pageants, open air concerts, dances, folkloric dance parades and a procession honoring the Christ of Bagazán.
 
Feast of the Nativity in Tabalosos
Location: San MartinDate: September 5 - 10
 
Every year the district of Tabalosos celebrates a traditional feast honoring the Nativity Virgin. The day's events include large food fairs, many artisan expos and concerts by popular national and local bands.
 
Feast of the Virgin in Chincheros
Location: ApurimacDate: September 7 - 8
 
Cocharcas pays homage to their patron saint the Virgin of Cocharcas with a pilgrimage where hundreds come to pay their respects at The Sanctuary of Cocharcas Colonial church, a procession followed by a live bands; folklore dance shows and concerts by popular local music bands. 
 
Nature Festival in Tarapoto
Location: TarapotoDate: September 8 - 16
 
The highlights of this nature friendly festival are wildlife themed photography exhibitions, painting and drawing contests; workshops and various guided tours through popular local tourist destinations.
 
Eco-tourism Festival in Huayllay
Location: PascoDate: September 12 - 18
 
This eco-tourism festival focuses on highlighting traditional cultural events in the town of Cachacucho and ecologically friendly tourist activities in the Huayllay National Sanctuary park. The town of Cachacucho hosts food fairs, llama races, lassoing contests, dance contests, MotoCross races, bonfires and dances. The most traditional and popular of the events are guided tours through the 11 possible routes to the Huayllay Rock Forest, which is famous for its interesting rock formations which have been naturally contoured by wind, water and shifting glaciers as well as its thermal baths believed to posses curative properties.
 
The Lord of Huanca Pilgrimage
Location: CuzcoDate: September 14 
 
The town of Locumba in Tacna annually hosts a festival in honor of its patron saint, the Lord of Locumba, which is attended by thousands of national and international guests. Many line up in long lines to have the opportunity to pray in its shrine. Some devotees pay homage in dances at the foot of its shrine. In honor of the day there are also processions, dances and handicraft fairs.
 
Feast of the Virgin of Mercy in Piura
Location: PiuraDate: September 14 - 30
 
During this time of the year thousands of devout believers throughout the country come to Piura in a pilgrimage to pay homage to the Virgin of Mercy. Several masses and processions are held in her honor, and the amount of religious stamps left in her shrine are impressive. Hundreds line up for hours simply to have the opportunity to touch and be able to pray in front of her statue.
 
Spring Festival in La Libertad
Location: TrujilloDate: September 17- 26
 
One of the most cheerful festivals in Peru, Trujillo's annual Spring Festival fills its streets with marinera dance shows, floats, dance parades, Peruvian Paso Horse shows, art fairs, food expos, several musical concerts, a song festival, brightly decorated streets and a popular beauty pageant.
 
Warachikuy
Location: CuzcoDate: September 21
 
A colorful and sometimes frightening Andean rite of passage festival dating back to the Inca Empire and taking place in the ruins of Sacsayhuaman where young men prove their strength through a series of physical tests that include tackling intricate rope obstacle courses; jumping through hoops of fire and physical confrontations with opponents.  In ancient times successfully passing these tests would welcome young men into adulthood, grant them citizenship and allow them the right to marry.
 
Tourist Week in Ucayali
Location: UcayaliDate: September 21 - 27
 
Tourist Week in Ucayali celebrates World Tourism Day with concerts by popular local and national acts, art and photography exhibitions; wood handicraft fairs, food expos, a Shaman night, parades with lively folkloric dances and the traditional Miss Turism Ucayali beauty pageant.
 
Tourist Week in Chiclayo
Location: LambayequeDate: September 24 - 30
 
Every year during Tourism Week the capital of Lambayeque prepares a series of cultural activities that include concerts by popular musical acts, dance parades, food, handicraft and agricultural fairs and various folkloric dance exhibitions. 
 
Mangroves Festival in Tumbes
Location: TumbesDate: September 24 - 30
 
Each year the city of Tumbes hopes to bring attention to the protection and conservation of its unique mangroves ecosystem by celebrating its Mangrove Festival. Among the festivals activities are sport competitions, float parades, open air concerts, dances and ecologically friendly informative workshops.
 
World Tourism Day in Tumbes
Location: TumbesDate: September 27
 
The city of Tumbes celebrates World Tourism day with a big parade including dancers, school children and marching bands as well as by hosting a series of tourism workshops.
 
Anniversary of Shipibo-Conibo Community
Location: UcayaliDate: September 28 - October 4 
 
This festival includes a handicraft fair, Shaman ceremonies, communal treks, water sports activities, archery tournaments, Shipibo Conibo textiles weaving and painting workshops; beauty pageants and a community dance.
 
Regional Paso Horse Contest 
Location: TrujilloDate: September 29
 
Every year Trujillo's Spring Festival includes their traditional Peruvian Paso Horse contest in which more than 200 of the finest horses in the country participate.  Following the contest, which covers more than 40 categories, are a series of cultural activities such as Marinera dance exhibitions, gastronomy and handicraft fairs; concerts and firework displays.
