Utah Education, Humanitarian Leaders to Discuss Next Steps in Peru

SALT LAKE CITY – Officials from Utah universities along with multiple local and national humanitarian organizations are scheduled to meet and discuss upcoming volunteer tourism expeditions, microfinance implementation, critical supply lines, government functions and educational exchange opportunities at 4 p.m. on Tuesday Dec. 20 in downtown Salt Lake City.

The meeting comes one month after a two-day summit in Lima and the Piura region of Peru late last month. Presenters at Tuesday’s meeting will include education and communication directors from Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University, and high-ranking officials from humanitarian groups such as Globus ReliefEagle-Condor HumanitarianThe Institute for Self Reliance AgricultureThe Hope Alliance, the Liahona Foundation, Mentors International and Yantalo Humanitarian Foundation.

The Nov. 22-23 summit – aimed at enhancing educational exchanges and exploring opportunities to battle crippling poverty in Peru – was led by Honorary Consul of Peru in UtahDavid Utrilla and focused on micro loans, humanitarian efforts, healthcare and educational assistance as well as other programs promoting sustainability and self-reliance.

Tuesday’s meeting will take place at the headquarters of Utrilla’s international business U.S. Translation Company on the third floor of the newly renovated historic Keyser Building at 320 West, 200 South.

The lower level of the building is also home to the Peruvian Consulate in Utah. Utrilla has been acting Peruvian consul in Utah since 2010, completely funding the consulate office in Salt Lake out-of-pocket.

“It warms my heart to know that so many individuals and organizations are willing to put forth their time and effort to aid progress in my home country,” Utrilla said. “The goal of this meeting is to build on the momentum created at last month’s conference. These presentations will lay the foundation for unprecedented humanitarian, education, and self-sustaining agricultural and financial opportunities between Utah and Peru.”

Utrilla will also give a short presentation on international relations between regional and local governments in Peru on Tuesday.

Attendees at last month’s meetings in Peru included high-ranking national officials from the Ministries of Education, Agriculture, Production, Development and Social Inclusion, and Woman with representatives from some of Peru’s top universities also in attendance.

Economic ties between Peru and Utah have also blossomed since the U.S. entered a free trade agreement with the burgeoning South American country in 2007, with exports to Peru more than doubling since 2006 led by Utah whose international commodity exports led the nation in 2009.

In 2010 Utah Sen. Mark Madsen, Utrilla and representatives from Utah State University traveled to Peru in one of several trade and education visits over last four years.
