One out of seven people in the world is a migrant
Despite a growing focus on migration and health, there is a lack of emphasis on the intersection of these topics and the health challenges faced by migrants across the globe. This monthly newsletter aims to close that gap by keeping you informed and up-to-date on migration and health topics and events.

Dear Friends and Colleagues of the Health Initiative of the Americas:
In 2000, the United Nations proclaimed December 18 International Migrant Day. Today we honor the decision of those who have left their communities of origin in search of a better life and those who have sought relief from economic, environmental, political, or affective hardship.
The Health Initiative of the Americas (HIA) in collaboration with the Mexican National Population Council (CONAPO for its Spanish acronym), has produced a report providing quantitative data and qualitative analysis of the Mexican youth residing in the United States. Special thanks to the Secretaries of Health and Foreign Affairs of Mexico, the University of California (UC), including researchers of the Center of Expertise on Migration and Health (COEMH) and the UC Global Health Institute (UCGH), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for their assistance in preparing this report.
Migration from Mexico is predominantly labor-based and thus the Mexican-origin population in the U.S. is young compared to non-Hispanic U.S.-born whites. These young people face a unique set of problems associated with their displacement. Dislocation, in combination with the challenges of assimilation, places youth in a vulnerable position. It is imperative to improve their access to health care to ameliorate health disparities in future adult populations. The health of a country is also defined by the health of its immigrants.
We wish you and the ones you love joy, peace, and a prosperous 2013.
Sincerely,
HIA staff and members
