Peruvian Chamber presents two
$2,500 scholarships in Puno ceremony

January 18, 2013

In a Puno, Peru ceremony, the Peruvian Chamber of Commerce of California (PCCC) has awarded scholarships to two students attending Universidad Nacional del Altiplano, Puno.   On January 9, 2013, PCCC Pres. Julian Hanberg presented $2.500.00 each in Cesar Herz Memorial Scholarship funds to Madelin Hancco Salazar and Tanya Luz Villanueva Alvarado.

The program, attended by 40 persons, included representatives of the Peruvian government, the Puno Roman Catholic Diocese, Puno station Radio Onda Azul and the Puno university.

Meeting on October 12, 2012, in Norwalk, California, the PCCC Scholarship Committee chose the two winners from among six finalists pre-selected by Radio Onda Azul Manager Yovanni Manrique Ruelas, in cooperation with Puno Catholic
Bishop Jorge Carrion Pavlich.   The Herz scholarships recall the founding president of the PCCC, a Peruvian who helped strengthen trade and cultural exchanges between Peru and the U.S.   The PCCC panel, including Hanberg, Vice Presidents Samuel Davila and Lucci Bolognesi and Past Pres. Rosario Caparo, made its choices unanimously. The PCCC is presenting six scholarships annually, with two awards each at universities in Puno, Iquitos and Cusco, Peru.

In the Puno ceremony, the honorees thanked God, their families and those who had selected them. Ms. Hancco Salazar, who has a strong background in religious studies, hopes to continue her academic work in communications sciences and earn advanced degrees.   Combining spiritual and humanitarian approaches to helping the ill, elderly and needy, she said, "I want to live a life of constant pastoral work outside of my personal life.   This scholarship will enable me to continue studying and fulfill my dream.   My paradigm is to finish preparing for my career as an educator, become qualified as a teacher of religion, pursue a master's and a doctorate... and get ahead and become and make change for the sake of future generations."

Ms. Villanueva Alvarado, who is intending to become an agricultural engineer, plans to assist in implementation of the "best quality of life for the rural population.   I focus on these words: quality of life.   And now, if I acquire more knowledge and strive to the fullest, I may realize my purpose and future as an agricultural engineer, and become part of the development of our country.   And, our brothers and sisters in the rural area, people like me, might have development and progress for implementing the best quality of life."

Congratulating the scholarship recipients, Hanberg said he was confident they would make proud their families, the people of Puno and Peru.   Observing that Ms. Villanueva Alvarado recently lost her father, Hanberg said, "I know he is here today with you in spirit, and he is very pleased with your achievements.   Both of our scholarship winners have good reason to celebrate."

In presenting the scholarships, Hanberg thanked his PCCC colleagues for helping select the winners.   For arranging the Puno ceremony, Hanberg expressed appreciation to nonprofit foundation Angels of Charity & Music, its president, Andrea Andrea, and to Radio Onda Azul, the Puno Catholic Diocese, LAN Airlines and Casa Andina Hotel.

During the awards program, Andrea Andrea gave a live musical performance.  ACM was in Puno for a humanitarian mission bringing food, clothes, blankets and other emergency aid to impoverished persons. Andrea, Hanberg and former PCCC Pres. Alfredo Sousa were delivering the aid in Lima, Puno and Andean mountain communities reaching more than 15,000 feet in elevation.

Because the Bishop of Puno had to attend to urgent business and was unable to attend, Padre Pepe of the Puno Diocese congratulated the scholarship winners and wished them God's blessings.   Also participating in the ceremony were Felix Vasquez Solis, Director-General of the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office in Puno, and Johan Cabrera, representing the public relations office of the Puno Regional Hospital.

In 2012, the PCCC awarded Herman L. Jesson Memorial Scholarships of $2,500.00 each to Ruth Lidia Delgado Faustino and Eduardo Reategui Monsalve, Jr., students at Universidad Nacional de la Amazonia Peruana (UNAP) in Iquitos, Peru.   These scholarships memorialize the PCCC Past President who was a pioneer in Peruvian travel and tourism.   The island of "Jessonia" is named for Jesson, an explorer and guide specializing in Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon.   And, the PCCC is gathering applications for two scholarships of $2,500.00 each, to be presented annually at Tricenteneria Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco.

Peruvian Sofia Mulanovich, the first South American to capture a world surfing title, was the guest of honor at a PCCC dinner in August 2012, in an event including speeches by Peruvian Consul-General Liliana Cino and other dignitaries and featuring live entertainment.   In 2011, the PCCC saluted Peruvian boxer Kina Malpartida, women's super featherweight world champion, with a dinner including live entertainment, speeches and presentations by Peruvian and other dignitaries.

Since 1977, the PCCC has been promoting trade, tourism and cultural relationships between Peru and the U.S.
