LDS LATINO BRANCH PRESIDENT AND FAMILY
BEING DEPORTED BY ICE

Salt Lake City, UT – In the ongoing debate over Utah’s immigration laws and a deep devide among some members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and leadership over the issue of immigration, an LDS Latino Branch President, Felix Callejas his wife and two children are under ICE custody and under deportation proceedings (See PDF Attachment)

Tony Yapias, Director of Projecto Latino de Utah said “I received a call late last night from a member of the President Callejas Branch telling me that their entire membership are devastated and saddened by the entire family being arrested” Recently, there has been much talk about the LDS Church position on the issue of immigration as they support HB-116 Guest Worker program. Still there is much division among right-wing conservative LDS Members and many who favored a more compassionate approach to solving our countries immigration problems.

Yapias said “I wonder what will members of the ‘deportation caucus’ (Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, Rep. Chris Harrod, Cherilyn Eagar, Ron Mortensen, Gayle Rizicka and others) will say now, as a fellow and respected member of their Church and his spouse and children are in jail awaiting deportation. Where is the compassion?”

The Callejas family was arrested on April 19, 2011 by ICE Agents from their home in Draper. Details about their arrest are unknown at this time. It is important to consider and recognized that this is not ICE Agent’s fault but rather our broken immigration laws that need to be fixed so that we can stop separating our families such as the Callejas.
