Nuclear secrets at Mar-a-Lago

In an unprecedented and extraordinary move, the FBI executed a search warrant last week at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home.1
Newly unsealed documents show that the FBI is investigating Trump for potential obstruction of justice and Espionage Act violations for illegally taking classified documents—including documents related to nuclear weapons—from his time in the White House to Mar-a-Lago.2
The FBI has a second active investigation into Trump's role in the January 6 insurrection.3 At the same time, Trump is facing inquiries by New York state's attorney general and by the district attorney in Georgia over his efforts to overturn the election.4,5
And yet despite Trump's lawlessness, the Republican Party rushed to Trump's defense.
Steve Bannon said on his podcast, "We need to choke down the FBI."6
Marjorie Taylor Greene called for the entire Department of Justice to be defunded.7
Pro-Trump social media forums called for a "civil war" and told users to "lock and load."8
And Kevin McCarthy—who would become the speaker of the House if Republicans win the midterm elections—pledged a full-throated investigation into the Justice Department should he control the House.9

Maclovia, there are real and legitimate critiques of the FBI and of law enforcement in the United States of America.
Modern American policing has its roots in white supremacist slave patrols.10 Today, the U.S. has more of its own population in cages than any other nation on Earth.11 Black people, immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, and low-income workers are disproportionately behind bars—and private prisons make huge profits off of human suffering in inhumane conditions.12
But when Trump and the MAGA GOP criticize law enforcement, these horrors are not what they're referring to.
Instead, Steve Bannon, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Trump himself are throwing tantrums because, for once, it looks as though they're being held accountable for their corruption and lies.
In a panicked and desperate attempt to evade accountability, the MAGA GOP is prepared to tear down our democracy.
Trump wants to install his handpicked lackeys to oversee elections so that when he runs in 2024, they will throw out the necessary number of votes to ensure he wins—no matter the will of the people.
And the GOP is dumping tens of millions of dollars into winning the midterm elections so they can put a stop to investigations of Trump and the January 6 insurrection.

Republicans rallying around Trump's cries of victimization know that their laments will fire up their base. In a way, they are gleefully using this opportunity to lash out at Democrats, spread disinformation, decry the "deep state," and—you guessed it—raise money for their Trump-backed MAGA agenda.
There is a real risk that, if their side turns out in large numbers while progressives, Democrats, and Independents stay home, we could see a huge red wave. But there's still hope: We're seeing an uptick in Democratic energy, including the turnout in Kansas for the vote to defend abortion access. MoveOn is focusing our grassroots power on building on that momentum, energizing progressive voters, and mobilizing voters who may not otherwise turn out in a midterm.
It's a tall order—but it's essential, we've seen that it's possible, and the stakes are too high to sit this election out. We see how Trump will rally his base. Now let's make sure we rally ours—which is the majority—to turn out this November.
