Health care is a human right. And yet, it is under attack across the country. On Monday, news broke that the right wing-hijacked Supreme Court appears to be set on overturning Roe v. Wade, which would allow horrible abortion bans to go into effect in dozens of states across the country.¹ 

While the justices have not finalized this ruling, it shows what direction the right-wing justices intend to go—they plan to overturn all of the protections afforded by Roe, immediately allowing state after state to enforce cruel abortion bans, and launch a full-on attack against reproductive rights. With the final Supreme Court decision expected in the next few weeks, now is the time for our elected officials at all levels, including President Biden to use all his power to act before any services are cut off.

The abortion ban laws passing in states across the country are terrifying. In Oklahoma, Republicans passed a bill that bans abortion after 6 weeks, before many people know they are pregnant, with no exceptions for rape or incest.² This ban is particularly disastrous because it would immediately cut off most abortion access in a state that has absorbed nearly half of all Texas patients who have traveled out of state for abortions since Texas enacted a similar law last fall.³ And it's not just Oklahoma.

The recent surge of abortion bans across the country has politicized abortion as a way to increase power for the GOP and dictate what a person can and cannot do with their body.⁴ But the reality is, the right to an abortion shouldn’t be political, because access to safe, legal abortion is access to vital health care, and we need to ensure accessible, high-quality health care to everyone in America. Accessible and affordable health care is already limited in our country, and losing access to vital reproductive health care is just going to put more individuals and communities in danger. These bans impact marginalized communities the most,⁵ and we need public health officials to step in and take action to protect and expand access to abortion and broader reproductive health now.

Good morning. The baby formula shortage highlights four larger problems with the U.S. economy. ‘Really scary’

Is my baby getting enough food? It is a typical fear among new parents — and an acute one now, because of a national shortage of baby formula.

A potential bacteria outbreak led to the February shutdown of a Michigan factory that makes Similac formula, and the plant still has not reopened. Its closure has aggravated shortages created by broader pandemic supply-chain problems. Last week, stores stocked about 43 percent less baby formula than usual.

“It gets really scary,” Carrie Fleming, who lives near Birmingham, Ala., told The Times. Her 3-month-old daughter, Lennix, can tolerate only one brand of formula, and Fleming could not find it anywhere near her. She finally located four small cans in New York — for $245.

In Oceanside, Calif., north of San Diego, Darice Browning was recently despondent after failing to find formula for her 10-month-old daughter, Octavia, who cannot eat solid foods. “I was freaking out, crying on the floor and my husband, Lane, came home from work and he’s like, ‘What’s wrong?’” Browning said, “and I’m like, ‘Dude, I can’t feed our kids, I don’t know what to do.’”

For many families, baby formula is a necessity. Some babies cannot drink breast milk — or enough of it to stay healthy — while many lower-income mothers work hourly jobs that do not provide time to breastfeed.

As my colleague Amanda Morris, who has been reporting on the shortage, says: “Most of the parents I spoke with around the country who were feeling the impact of this the hardest were ones that either had limited resources or time, or ones whose babies had allergies or disabilities that severely limited their choices.”

F.D.A. officials say they are trying to alleviate the crisis. Some members of Congress — including Representative Rosa DeLauro, a Connecticut Democrat, and Senator Mitt Romney, a Utah Republican — say the federal government needs to do more.

In addition to being an urgent problem for families, the shortage highlights four larger problems within the U.S. economy. Today’s newsletter focuses on them.

1. The ‘everything shortage’

The pandemic has created shortages for many goods, including cars, semiconductors and furniture.

The main reasons: Factories and ports are coping with virus outbreaks and worker shortages at the same time that consumer demand for physical goods has surged, because of government stimulus programs and a shift away from spending on services (like restaurant meals). As a result, much of the global supply chain is overloaded.

The baby formula industry was already coping with these issues before an Abbott Nutrition factory in Sturgis, Mich., shut down. The company shut the factory after four babies — all of whom had drunk formula made there — contracted a rare bacterial infection; two of the babies died. It remains unclear whether the formula caused the infections.

Because sales of baby formula do not fluctuate much in normal times, factories generally lack the ability to accelerate production quickly, Rudi Leuschner, a supply-chain expert at Rutgers University, said. As a result, other factories have not been able to make up for the Sturgis shutdown.

2. Big business

The baby formula business has something in common with many other U.S. industries: It is highly concentrated.

Three companies — Abbott, Gerber and Reckitt — make nearly all of the formula that Americans use. Abbott is the largest of the three, with roughly 40 percent of the market. A baby formula display shelf in San Diego.Ariana Drehsler for The New York Times Over the past few decades, this kind of corporate concentration has become more common in the U.S. economy, and it tends to be very good for companies. They face less competition, allowing them to keep prices higher and wages lower. Thomas Philippon, an economist at N.Y.U., refers to this trend as “the great reversal.” The subtitle of his 2019 book on the subject is “How America Gave Up on Free Markets.” For workers and consumers, concentration is often problematic. The baby-formula shortage is the latest example. If the market had more producers, a problem at any one of them might not be such a big deal. It’s even possible the problem would not happen at all. “Abbott does not fear consumers will flee,” Sarah Miller, executive director of the American Economic Liberties Project, which advocates less concentration, told me. “And it does not fear government, which has a pathetic track record when it comes to holding powerful corporations and executives accountable.” (The Times has profiled Miller and her work.) 3. Big bureaucracy Even as the industry seems to be under-regulated in some crucial ways, it may be overregulated in other, superficial ways. This newsletter has covered ways that the F.D.A.’s bureaucratic inflexibility has hampered its Covid policy, and baby formula turns out to be another case study. Many formulas sold in Europe exceed the F.D.A.’s nutritional standards, but they are banned from being sold here, often because of technicalities, like labeling, Derek Thompson of The Atlantic has noted. Donald Trump exacerbated the situation with a trade policy that made it harder to import formula from Canada. These policies benefit American formula makers, at the expense of families. The inflexibility of American regulatory and trade policy, Thompson wrote, “might be the most important part of the story.” 4. The gerontocracy The U.S. has long put a higher priority on taking care of the elderly than taking care of young families. Americans over 65 receive universal health insurance (Medicare), and most receive a regular government check (Social Security). Many children, by contrast, live in poverty. Relative to other affluent countries, the U.S. spends a notably small share of its budget on children; President Biden’s stalled Build Back Better plan aimed to change this, Urban Institute researchers have pointed out. Alyssa Rosenberg, a Washington Post columnist, argues that the formula shortage is part of this story. “Babies and their well-being have never been much of a priority in the United States,” Rosenberg wrote this week. “But an alarming shortage of infant formula — and the lack of a national mobilization to keep babies fed — provides a new measure of how deeply that indifference runs.” In her column, Rosenberg suggests the creation of a national stockpile, as exists for some other crucial resources, to prevent future shortages. Fantastic idea to supplement formulas with healthy foods for babies. Cornstarch quinoa water or soy milk Clean and cook the quinoa well then strain it and blend it and pass it through the strainer again and blend it this time with the milk. In another pot, prepare the cornstarch or cornstarch with water. bring the water to a boil and then lower the temperature and add the cornstarch dissolved in water... and add to the hot water stirring frequently without making lumps. Then in the bottle put 4 ounces of quinoa with milk and 4 ounces of cornstarch is very consistent and you will see that this is better food for your newborn children. I hope this idea can help families desperate for healthy food for their newborn children

CORTE SUPREMA PUEDE ESTAR LISTA PARA ANULAR PROYECTO ROE

El borrador de opinión filtrado la semana

pasada que indica que la Corte Suprema puede estar lista para anular Roe v. Wade nos tiene a todos preocupados, y con razón.
Y hay más en juego aquí que solo el aborto. Si se anula Roe, el razonamiento en el proyecto de opinión podría generar un efecto dominó en lo que respecta a otras libertades de larga data, como el acceso a la anticoncepción.
Es importante tener en cuenta que cualquier decisión oficial que tome la Corte sobre Roe v. Wade no tendrá un efecto directo sobre el acceso o la legalidad del control de la natalidad en Utah. Pero eso no significa que no será el objetivo en algún momento, y anular Roe v. Wade allana el camino para hacerlo.
Muchos de nosotros nos hacemos la misma pregunta: si la Corte Suprema está dispuesta a anular un precedente de casi cincuenta años que han dicho que defenderían, ¿qué más anularán?
No queremos averiguarlo. Y con los republicanos en Idaho, Louisiana y Mississippi que ya están tomando medidas para prohibir la anticoncepción, tenemos que estar en alerta máxima aquí en Utah. Por eso necesitamos tu ayuda.
¿Puede contribuir hoy para que podamos seguir luchando para elegir demócratas en Utah? Dependerá de los demócratas tomar una posición en nuestra legislatura estatal y proteger a los habitantes de Utah frente a los ataques de la extrema derecha a nuestras libertades.

 
Juntos podemos animar a los votantes antes de una de las elecciones más importantes que jamás hayamos visto.

BICENTENARIO DEL PERU 2021

Si bien el cierto esta fecha deberia de ser la mas importante en la historia del Peru, debido a la pandemia del Covid 19 nos ha llevado a estar poco preparados y aun algo escepticos de poder reunir a la comunidad en pleno.  Por lo menos en el Estado de Utah el Consulado hasta el momento no se ha pronunciado ni siquiera en poder hacer el Isamiento de Bandera cosa que Gracias a la Red de Peruanos en Utah *USA* se ha llevado por mas de tres anos consecutivos con la ayuda o sin la ayuda del consulado que por supuesto cuando esta LISTO lo titula como que el lo organizo he hiso los planes correspondientes para  poder llevar a efecto un acto tan simple pero significativo para todos los peruanos en el Estado de Utah. Pero bueno de nada sirve filosofar al respecto pero es bastante lamentable no continuar con algo tan significativo he importante.

Pero bueno les hablare un poco al respecto de lo que es el Bicentario del Peru. 

El bicentenario de la Independencia del Perú tendrá como fecha el 28 de julio de 2021. Su celebración conmemorará los 200 años de la proclamación de Independencia del Perú. La celebración corresponderá a diversas actividades y planes nacionales que se preparan con años de anticipación. Pero por supuesto esto depende mucho de cada consulado. Porque encima que no tenemos un Presidente que nos represente los consulados honorios como este no tendra el suficiente interes ni presupuesto para hacer nada , al menos que sea algo privado como acostumbra este senor.  En fin tendre la esperanza de esperar algunos dias mas a ver que pasa y luego por supuesto les avisare que paso con el bicentario aqui en utah.

Dear Maclovia, Thank you for stepping up to support the transgender community.  We are grateful to the members of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee! HB 302 will not move forward. Today, Utah has again demonstrated that when it comes to protecting all children, we are on the same team.  We are also grateful to both Governor Spencer Cox and Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson for their calm guidance. They are true peacemakers who care for LGBTQ kids. Thank you for helping us navigate this challenging debate.  We have now had several meetings with Rep. Birkeland. I do not see her as an enemy, nor even as a member of an opposing team. She is a fierce champion for girls’ sports. I hope that we will always match her passion as we advocate for LGBTQ kids. My hope is that we can work with Rep. Birkeland in the future to ensure fairness for all of Utah’s incredible student-athletes.  MVPs: I’m grateful to everyone who wrote op-eds or called, texted and met with lawmakers on this issue. I want to give a special shout out to Sue Robbins from the Equality Utah Transgender Advisory Council, Candice Metzler, the ED of Transgender Education Advocates of Utah, Marina Lowe from the ACLU of Utah, Shannon Minter from NCLR, Dr. Nikki Mihaloupolos and Dr. Jenn Plumb from Primary Children’s, Sunny Washington and Elizabeth Converse from Silicon Slopes Commons, SLC Council Member Chris Wharton, Kate Charipar from University of Utah, Carrie Butler and finally, Professor Clifford Rosky from the University of Utah. They were on the field every day with us during this legislative season. To Transgender Youth:  You have so many allies. There were so many people lobbying on your behalf, sometimes loud and sometimes behind the scenes; parents, businesses, mayors, city councilmembers, students, attorneys, teachers, administrators, faith leaders, universities, private schools, sports fans, sports teams and lawmakers from both parties. REFORMA MIGRATORIA ANUNCIADA POR EL PRESIDENTE BIDEN

Refoma migratoria anunciada por el presidente Biden legalizaría a 600,000 peruanos, entre 11 millones de indocumentados

WASHINGTON, ENE 19 –   “El proyecto de ley de inmigración destinado a la legalización de 11 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados en Estados Unidos, podrá beneficiar también a 600,000 compatriotas que viven en la sombra y han sufrido la política antimigratoria de Donald Trump en los últimos cuatro años”, expresó el presidente de la Peruvian American National Council (PANC), Kilder Fuentes, activista peruano por los derechos de los inmigrantes y experto en comunidades migrantes en el exterior.

Fue al conocerse que este 20 de enero, el presidente electo Joe Biden enviará un proyecto de ley al Congreso norteamericano, solicitando estatus legal para los millones de inmigrantes indocumentados que viven en Estados Unidos. “Somos más de un millón y medio de peruanos, que aportamos a la economía estadounidense. Sin embargo, aún tenemos 600,000 mil hermanos peruanos cuya condición migratoria es irregular”, remarcó Fuentes.

El activista, que radica en Estados Unidos desde hace tres décadas, es conocido por su permanente compromiso en la defensa de los derechos de nuestros compatriotas en el exterior. Dijo estar consciente que, al no contar con la documentación necesaria, en cualquier parte del mundo, los peruanos indocumentados se han convertido en “mano de obra barata”, trabajando y viviendo con la incertidumbre de ser deportados y, por consiguiente, exponiéndose a una serie de abusos de sus derechos laborales.

“Al ser aprobada esta ley, les otorgaría una tarjeta de residencia temporal por 5 años para que, tres años después, puedan solicitar la ciudadanía estadounidense”, añadió Fuentes tras señalar que los que tienen DACA y TPS podrán solicitar una tarjeta de residencia de manera inmediata. El programa DACA protege a las personas de la deportación que llegaron al país cuando eran niños. El TPS es un estatus de protección temporal a personas de países en conflicto o que sufrieron desastres naturales, como El Salvador, Honduras, entre otros.

Los requisitos para beneficiarse de esta ley son estar en EEUU antes del 1 de enero del 2021, además de otros que incluyen pasar una verificación de antecedentes penales y el pago de sus impuestos.

Como se recuerda, la vicepresidenta electa Kamala Harris confirmó en una reciente entrevista en la cadena Univisión (EEUU) que los beneficiarios de DACA y TPS “obtendrán automáticamente tarjetas de residencia” mientras que otros estarían en un camino de ocho años hacia la ciudadanía.

La última amnistía de inmigración, otorgada por el presidente Ronald Reagan, legalizó a 3 millones de personas en 1986. En el 2007, 2013 y 2009 se intentó sin éxito aprobar una reforma migratoria. Ahora, se prevé que este proyecto de ley presentada por el presidente Biden, sea aprobada sin dificultad, porque el Congreso estadounidense -compuesto por la Cámara de Representantes y el Senado norteamericano- están ahora bajo el control del partido Demócrata.

EL MUNDO ESPERA ESPERANZA Y PAZ SOCIAL EN LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS

Dear Maclovia, Today we celebrate. Our country and our democracy have endured.  As the stunning poet laureate Amanda Gorman observed today: “Somehow we’ve weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken, just unfinished.” Congratulations, President Biden and Vice-President Harris!     A heavy weight has been lifted. Under the previous administration, members of our LGBTQ family have been banned from serving in the U.S. military. We also had to fight before the Supreme Court as the administration worked to exclude us from federal nondiscrimination protections. In just the last week, Health and Human Services received instructions allowing social service providers to discriminate against LGBTQ Americans.  Those days are over.  As Lady Gaga, J-Lo and Garth Brooks descended the stairs and took to the stage, it was clear that all Americans were being welcomed back to our country. Each lyric from the great American songbook carried a new poignancy and urgency. We will never hear those songs the same way again after the last four years.  Here in Utah, we have another reason to celebrate. Governor Spencer Cox and Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson have released an impressive new document for their first 500 days: One Utah Roadmap. In this ambitious and inclusive plan they make a promise to elevate women, people of color and LGBTQIA+ Utahns. This is a historic first for any Republican governor.      Governor Cox and Lt. Governor Henderson, thank you! This document fills us with both hope and possibility. The LGBTQ community is here to serve our state, and help you realize your ambitious vision of inclusion.  Our nation and state face incredible challenges. But today, we have reasons to celebrate: new administrations in state and federal government, the historic first woman (of color!) to be vice-president, and a new roadmap that includes and elevates LGBTQ Utahns.   Today, we are filled with gratitude and hope.
